As most of the world moves forward toward gay equality, Russia is seemingly heading backward. Antigay sentiment and legislation are spreading rapidly throughout the country. In 2013, the Russian parliament passed a ban on so-called 'gay propaganda' that effectively makes nearly any public discussion of gay equality a crime. It is my hope that this documentary will educate viewers to their reality.

Although they were allies during WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union, fueled by their fundamental ideological differences, embarked on what would be called the Cold War starting in the post-WWII era. As both sides would eventually have nuclear and atomic bomb technology which potentially spelled the end of the world if used, both sides instead largely used propaganda to win the Cold War. The propaganda was both official (i.e. issued by the government) and unofficial, and was designed to make its own side look good while making the other side look bad. The propaganda was aimed to its own citizens, to the other side and to others around the world, who were often looking to the two superpowers for support. One problem often was that the propaganda had to match the reality that people saw and faced on the ground.

A documentary portrait of gay life, activism, and history in Germany. Through interviews and observational footage, Rosa von Praunheim explores themes of visibility, pride, discrimination, and political engagement within the LGBTQ+ community. The film features conversations with gay actor Kurt von Ruffin, Berlin-based promoter Harry Toste, and activist Andreas Meyer-Hanno, whose perspectives reflect different facets of gay cultural and political life. A central element of the film is the portrait of three older homosexual men, whose personal histories collectively trace a broader arc of 20th-century gay experience in Germany. One recounts life in the relatively liberal 1920s, another describes persecution and imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp, and the third reflects on the continued hostility faced by homosexuals in the repressive climate of the 1950s. Together, these testimonies highlight shifting yet persistent forms of oppression and resilience across decades.
